Fake or real plants for a Dubai holiday home? What works with AC and no one to water them

1 October 2026

Fake plants for an Airbnb or real ones? In a Dubai holiday home, the answer depends less on taste than on upkeep. A real plant needs light, water and someone to look after it between stays. A good artificial plant only needs dusting, but a cheap imitation shows, especially in photos. So the right choice depends on who comes into the apartment, and how often. Here is how to decide.

Why put plants in a rental at all?

Greenery is one of the details that make an apartment feel welcoming. It warms up a light palette, softens straight furniture lines and brings listing photos to life. In our furnishing, plants are part of the décor, alongside lighting and artwork.

They have to stay looking good, though. A dried-out plant in a rental sends the opposite message: "nobody looks after this place".

Real plants: pros and Dubai-specific constraints

Pros

  • Authentic look and feel.
  • A living touch that longer-stay guests appreciate.

Constraints in a Dubai rental

  • Air conditioning, widely used in Dubai, makes indoor air drier. Not every plant copes.
  • Light is very uneven: strong behind sun-facing glazing, weak at the back of a bedroom or in a bathroom.
  • Watering: between guests, who does it? Cleaners are not always briefed for it, and guests don't think of it.
  • Empty periods: a few vacant days with the AC off or turned down can be enough to damage a plant.

For species, ask a Dubai garden centre and describe the real light in each room: they know what survives indoors with AC.

Artificial indoor plants: when they make sense

Pros

  • No watering, no dependence on light.
  • The same look for every guest, and from photo to reality.
  • They can go where nothing grows: windowless bathroom, entrance, corridor.

Watch out for

  • Quality: shiny leaves, flat colour, visible plastic stems… a cheap imitation is obvious in person and even more so in photos.
  • Dust: it settles on leaves. A wipe or a duster should be part of the cleaning routine.
  • Direct sun: behind very exposed glazing, some materials can fade over time.

Is a green wall a good idea for a rental?

In the project pictured above, a green wall dresses the balcony and is visible from the bed through the glass. It is a permanent green backdrop, with no pots to move and no individual plants to check.

In a rental, a green wall works if it stays easy to maintain. Before planning one, ask three questions: who maintains it, what do the building rules say about balconies, and how does it handle full sun.

Where to place plants for photos and guests

Whatever you choose, placement matters as much as the plant:

  • In an empty corner of the living room, a large potted plant balances the room and dresses the lead photo.
  • On the dining table or worktop, a small plant adds green without clutter.
  • In the bathroom, a small pot by the basin is enough: this is usually where artificial wins.
  • Never in a walkway: a plant knocked over by a suitcase means soil on the floor and extra cleaning.

One or two well-placed plants beat a dozen scattered around.

Criterion Real plants Good-quality artificial plants
Upkeep Regular watering, monitoring Dusting
Air conditioning Depends on species No effect
Low-light rooms Difficult No problem
In photos Authentic if healthy Consistent, if realistic
Apartment empty for days Risky No consequence

Who waters the plants between stays?

That's the real question. If you go real, watering has to be part of the cleaning routine, with clear instructions per plant. If the apartment is run by a management agency, for instance BnbSure, our group's short-term rental management agency, raise it from day one.

With no one to take care of it, the sensible choice is good-quality artificial greenery, possibly with one or two undemanding real plants.

FAQ

FAQ

Should an Airbnb have fake or real plants?

It depends on the upkeep you can count on. With no one to water between stays, good artificial plants are safer. With regular, briefed cleaning, a few real plants suited to the apartment's light are a real plus.

Which indoor plants handle AC and low light in Dubai?

It depends on the species and on each room's exposure. Ask a local garden centre and describe the apartment's real light. In windowless rooms, go artificial.

Is a green wall suitable for a rental apartment?

Yes, if it is easy to maintain and allowed by the building rules. Check who looks after it and how it handles direct sun, especially on a balcony.

What are the best fake plants for an Airbnb?

Ones that don't look fake: varied leaf colour, matte finish, realistic stems. Place them where real plants would plausibly grow, and dust them regularly.

Who takes care of real plants between guests?

Whoever cleans the apartment, if it is written into their routine with clear instructions. If a management agency runs the rental, agree on it from the start; otherwise, choose artificial.
